Find the right school for you
Physical therapy is a science requiring a great deal of training. This is one reason why physical therapy schools in Ontario and elsewhere offer the discipline at the graduate degree level only. According to the Ontario Council of University Programs in Rehabilitation Sciences (OCUPRS), a physical therapist should possess the following skills and attributes: an interest in human movement and health, sensitivity and compassion, information gathering skills, excellent communication and critical thinking skills, psychomotor and physical skills involved in patient contact, and stable emotional health.
To enter a master level physical therapy program (commonly called the Professional Master of Physical Therapy, or MPT program), one must have a bachelor degree that included the completion of courses such as general or introductory science, social science, liberal arts, English or writing, physiology, and statistics. Most MPT programs take about two years to complete. After graduation, graduates must apply to the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators to take the Physiotherapy Competence Examination, the national certification examination required in all Canadian provinces. All Ontario physical therapists must apply for registration in the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, the regulating body for physical therapists in the province. In addition to registering all physical therapists in Ontario, this agency sets quality assurance and standards, and handles complaints and discipline.
