Find the right school for you
Oregon does not mandate that those who become licensed as nursing home administrators in the state have a bachelor degree specific to long term care or health care administration. A bachelor degree in any major is acceptable, as long as one completes the state’s Administrator-in-Training (AIT) program. This program will offer the opportunity for an internship of six months and 960 hours functioning in an administrative position in a nursing care environment in Oregon. Students who are still pursuing a bachelor degree in any major may enroll in the Administrator-in-Training program while still undergoing long term education in Oregon. However, a degree must be obtained prior to taking the state and national certification and licensure examinations.
Advanced degrees are also possible for those already working in long term care administration or for those who have a bachelor degree in a different major but want to pursue a graduate degree in long term care or health administration. Some choose to go for a master degree in health care/long term care administration, and others take it as far as obtaining a doctoral degree. While these options will most likely garner you higher wages, a graduate degree is not necessary for those just beginning a career in long term care administration in Oregon.
