Education/Degrees/Courses for Oregon Respiratory Therapists

The minimum education requirement for a respiratory therapist is a two-year Associate of Science degree earned online or through Oregon Respiratory Therapy schools.  Upon completing this degree, the student will be required to take the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) exam.  

In order to enroll in an approved school in Oregon, it is necessary to have a high school diploma or equivalent and the person must be 18
years old.  Schools are looking for students who have taken algebra, biology and chemistry in high school and who know how to use a computer.

Only students graduating with C averages from accredited programs will be considered for certification as a respiratory therapist in Oregon.  During school the student must get his Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification and must keep it up-to-date.
The first two semesters consists mainly in core subjects such as English, freshmen orientation, science and beginning respiratory classes.  The second semester the student begins work in a health center or an area hospital.

The second year the student continues his work in a health center or hospital and studies subjects such as psychology, microbiology, cardiopulmonary disease and more advanced courses in respiratory care.

Those who decide to continue with a degree completion program in order to get a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Respiratory Care will receive more advanced training in the respiratory field.  They are taught methods to clear the bronchioles and lungs, how to administer medical gases, respiratory therapy and ventilator support.    They continue to practice in Oregon-based hospitals and clinics.  Having a Bachelor of Science degree will allow the respiratory therapist to advance in his field quicker and will allow him to apply for higher paying and more specialized jobs.

Through campus or online programs, aspiring Respiratory Therapists in Portland, Salem, Eugene and Gresham, Oregon may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Providence Saint Vincent Medical Center, Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, Sacred Heart Medical Center and Salem Hospital.
