How to Become a Veterinary Technician in Oregon

Dental care, anesthesia, surgery assistance, and basic animal care, are all part of a day in the life of a veterinarian technician.
Prospects for this career are excellent anywhere in the United States. The projection through 2016 for growth in the veterinary technician field is 36% nationally, and 28% in Oregon.

Individuals with an aptitude for math and science will generally have an easier transition from high school to the post-secondary Oregon vet tech programs that are required because of the focus on these types of courses. An associate degree or four years of experience as a veterinary assistant are the standard educational requirements in obtaining a state license in Oregon. Candidates must first pass the VTNE exam (Veterinary Technician National Examination) with a passing score of at least 425. The VTNE is a national exam that is administered through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB), for a fee of $200. Exam participants can choose either a January or June date each year to sit for the examination. Exams can be taken up to five times without any special approval. After the fifth time, individuals must get written approval from the AAVSB Board of Directors. A practice exam is available online for a fee of $45 to help students prepare to sit for the exam.
The Oregon Veterinary Technician and Assistant Association (OVTAA) was created in 2005 to gain understanding and recognition for the support staff in the veterinary field.
The OVTA is the voice for technicians and assistants in the state of Oregon on issues concerning this field. Networking opportunities at conferences, membership meetings, and community activities, are just one of the many benefits members receive by joining this association. Additional benefits include continuing education opportunities and a discounted membership in NAVTA (National Association of Veterinary Technicians Association).
There are several levels of membership in OVTAA. The standard membership is an active membership for licensed veterinary technicians, and is available for $35 per year.
Additional information on membership levels, eligibility requirements, and benefits can be viewed on OVTAA’s internet site @ http://www.ovtaa.org.
