Pediatric Nursing Colleges in Florida - FL

Right now, most states (including Florida) require that all pediatric nurses complete a graduate program specializing in pediatrics. However, since the American Association of Colleges of Nursing has requested that all entry-level advanced nurse practitioners receive a doctorate degree instead, students can expect most Master of Science in Nursing programs to be replaced by Doctor of Nursing Practice programs by 2015. National certification agencies will most likely require pediatric nurses to hold doctorate degrees in the near future as well. Until then, students may still take advantage of a variety of master and post-master pediatric nurse practitioner programs in Florida. Those that prefer the ease of home study should consider earning a pediatric degree or certificate from one of the many online schools available to nursing students.

Florida’s state and private universities in cities like Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Gainesville are home to several pediatric nurse practitioner programs as well. For example, there are a few Master of Science in Nursing: Pediatric Nurse Practitioner programs that run between forty-seven to fifty-seven course credits in length. Students that enroll in these particular programs should be prepared to spend approximately 800 hours in clinical training.

There is also a Master of Science in Nursing: Advanced Child Health Nursing program that similarly prepares students for a career in pediatric nursing. This program consists of forty-five course credits and 630 hours of practical experience. Some examples of courses found within these programs’ curriculum plans include: Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning, Health Promotion and Role Development in Advanced Practice Nursing, Advanced Topics in Pharmacology, and Pediatrics I for APNs.

Students that do want to engage in doctorate education can enroll in either a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program or an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice: Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program. The accelerated option can be completed with ninety-three credits and 1,072 clinical hours.
