PNP education will be similar to NP education in Maine, with many of the same courses being taken. However, PNPs will study assessment, diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents as their special focus. A PNP’s clinical training will also be targeted to this area, with PNP students working with children and adolescents in settings where real PNPs work, such as medical facilities, physician’s offices, schools, and community and public health centers. Many hospitals throughout Maine have agreements with nursing schools and allow NP students to fulfill the clinical training requirements of their program there. Some of the hospitals that could potentially provide training or employment for PNPs include Mercy Hospital, Maine Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Brighton Medical Center.

Before a PNP can become licensed in Maine, he or she must take an exam to become certified to practice in pediatrics. Certification agencies that are often chosen include the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board and the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
