Students who enroll in Montana’s pediatric nurse practitioner programs in pursuit of graduate degrees must first earn undergraduate credentials in nursing. In bachelor of science (BSN) programs, students take classes such as chemistry, biology, health informatics and health ethics. In addition to these classes and any others in which they must enroll to fulfill undergraduate degree requirements, students may wish to take courses in human development and psychology to ensure a deepened understanding of young people so they can effectively serve their needs. After completing their BSN programs, graduates can be licensed as registered nurses by Montana’s Department of Labor and Industry to work across the state in cities like Missoula, Butte and Bozeman as well as be certified by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).

Those who attain master degrees in nursing (MSN) complement their clinical skills with coursework in topics like research analysis and leadership in health care. In addition, practica provide them field experience in which they can apply textbook knowledge in real-world settings. Earning this credential enables them to work in the field as pediatric nurse practitioners. After graduating, these individuals can be licensed as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) as well as be certified by PNCB as either primary or acute care pediatric nurse practitioners.
