Pediatric nurse practitioner programs in Nevada are offered at a master’s level of study. Admission to such programs often includes requirements such as a bachelor’s degree in nursing, letters of recommendation from previous instructors or supervisors, a minimum of one year working as a registered nurse, and a current license as a registered nurse.
Some programs offer graduate courses through online classes, enabling those who are currently working some flexibility regarding times at which they access the course information, as well as precluding the need to relocate. There may be need for periodic on-campus meetings through the term, but these are easily scheduled and usually do not occur more than three times during a semester.
According to the Nevada Nursing Board, pediatric nurse practitioners fall under the guidelines for advance practice nursing. In order to obtain a certificate of recognition in Nevada as an advance practice nurse, one must be a registered nurse; attend an accredited program that is at least one year in duration (including at least four months of classroom instruction and supervised clinical study); take advanced courses in assessing health issues, pathophysiology, and advance practice preparation; and concentrate in a medical specialty such as pediatrics. Academic programs that include all of these requirements will give students the greatest advantage in pursuing their advanced practice nursing certification.
