Individuals who show an interest in becoming New York based pediatric nurse practitioners will be encouraged to find a number of PNP programs within the state. These programs may be found online and in more traditional university or college settings. Pediatric nurse practitioner training is at the graduate education level. Once a registered nurse has completed undergraduate studies, he or she may pursue a graduate nursing degree. For a pediatric nurse practitioner, this may be a master’s degree, post-master’s certificate, or doctoral degree.
The New York State Board of Nursing has currently approved 36 masters or graduate certificate programs and 10 doctoral degree programs for nurse practitioners within the state. Of these schools, 10 of are listed as offering specialty education for pediatric nurse practitioners.
Programs for pediatric nurse practitioners are similar to other nurse practitioner training programs in that students study courses on the theory of nursing, assessment and treatment modalities, as well as pharmacology. However, pediatric nurse practitioner students will take specialized classes focusing on their target patient group: children.
Their clinical training will also be focused on working directly with children in an actual treatment setting. Medical facilities in New York that could be used for clinical PNP experiences include Bellevue Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, Brookdale Hospital, and St. Luke’s Hospital.
