Find the right school for you
While there are several educational programs for family nurse practitioners in North Dakota, those who want to specialize in pediatrics may have to work to earn their degree at an out-of-state school or through an online program. The most important factor to consider is whether the program is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting body and whether it fulfills the requirements for both didactic coursework and clinical experience.
The North Dakota Board of Nursing requires that a nurse practitioner be licensed. To receive licensure as an advance practice nurse, you must first hold a current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of North Dakota. Registered nurses who are licensed in states that have reciprocal agreements also qualify. Completion of an advanced nursing program (typically resulting in a master’s degree) as well as successful completion of a national certification examination is also required. Advanced practice nurses, including pediatric nurse practitioners, must also submit a scope of practice statement that must be approved by the board of nursing.
Once a pediatric nurse practitioner is certified and licensed, continuing education remains an important part of maintaining one’s qualifications. Advanced practice nurses in North Dakota must complete at least 12 contact hours of continuing education every two years in order to renew their license. Those with prescriptive authority must fulfill 15 contact hours related to pharmacology, which will also satisfy the 12 contact hour requirement.
