There are several pediatric nurse practitioner programs in Ohio that meet the requirements for advanced practice certification by nationally recognized certifying agencies such as the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Several options for study are available as well. Even students who are nurses but have a bachelor’s degree in something other than nursing can obtain a graduate degree in advance practice nursing. Both full-time and part-time programs are available to accommodate the needs of individual students. For even greater convenience and accessibility, some programs offer core courses in a Web-based format, with periodic on-campus meetings scheduled throughout the term.

All advance practice programs typically require 500-600 hours of supervised clinical experience in addition to classroom education. Many hospitals, such as the Cleveland Clinic, and other clinical sites throughout the state of Ohio provide opportunities for advanced practice nursing students to obtain the necessary clinical experience. Core courses for pediatric nurse practitioners may include topics such as Theoretical Foundations for Advanced Practice Roles in Nursing and Nursing within the American Health Care System. Specialized courses for pediatrics include Pharmacology for Advanced Nursing Practice, Advanced Child Development, and Pathophysiology of Altered Health States.
