Pediatric nurse practitioner programs in Rhode Island can be found online and in traditional university, nursing school or college settings. Education for pediatric nurse practitioners is provided at the graduate level, and usually occurs after an undergraduate nursing degree and a registered nurse license has been attained. Training for pediatric nurse practitioners may take the form of a two year master’s degree program, a four year doctoral degree program, or a one to two year post-master’s certificate program.

Courses that one will encounter in a pediatric nurse practitioner program will be similar to those in a traditional nurse practitioner program, with an emphasis on children and adolescents as the target patient group. Courses in the theory of nursing, leadership and nursing practice are commonly found.

Clinical training experiences will be held in actual medical facilities in Rhode Island, where students get the opportunity to work with children and adolescents in a supervised setting. Examples of medical facilities in Rhode Island that could possibly host clinical training experiences and practicums include Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital and Kent Hospital.

After graduation, pediatric nurse practitioners are not limited to medical facilities for positions, however. In Rhode Island, pediatric nurse practitioners work in settings including physician’s offices, outpatient clinics, schools and commercial industry.
