Whether becoming a dental assistant is a step towards becoming a hygienist or an Expanded Function Dental Assistant or an end unto itself, your education is up to you and your potential employer. However, without further education, the state of Pennsylvania will only allow an assistant to practice under direct supervision. If you aspire to become an EFDA, though, you must graduate from an accredited 2-year college that offers associates’ degrees in an EFDA program. Or, you can complete an EFDA certification program that includes at least 200 hours of clinical instruction and is ADA approved. There are several dental assistant schools in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania Dental Assistant Continuing Education Requirements

If you are an Expanded Function Dental Assistant, your license must be renewed in every odd-numbered year by taking 10 continuing education hours.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Dental Assistants in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown and Erie, Pennsylvania may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Albert Einstein Medical Center, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Saint Luke's Hospitals and Temple University Hospital.
