Find the right school for you
There are a few options for those wanting to train to be long term care administrators in Pennsylvania. Long term care education in Pennsylvania for prospective nursing home administrators involves getting at least a bachelor degree, although that degree does not have to be in nursing home administration. However, if your degree is in some other field, the degree must still include or have in addition to it 120 clock hours of training in a long term care administration training program approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators. Candidates with a master degree in nursing home administration, hospital administration, public health administration, social gerontology, or in some other area in which there is an emphasis in related health facility administration are looked upon favorably by the board when applying for licensure in the state.
A clause does exist in the rules and regulations of Pennsylvania that allows those with a high school diploma, graduates of a 120 hour board approved long term care administration training program with two years of practical experience to apply for licensure. However, these candidates must appear personally before the board to plead their case directly. They must also have assistant administrator or director experience, just as other candidates are required to have.
