Pennsylvania Licensed Practical Nurse
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in May 2008 that there were just over 37,000 licensed practical nurses (LPN) in the state of Pennsylvania. The field of nursing as whole is experiencing a shortage in almost all areas, so jobs should be plentiful in the near future, especially in rural areas. Pennsylvania state requirements for LPNs are minimal making it a very appealing career choice for high school graduates who want to enter the medical field or individuals who have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time and would like to re-enter in the medical world.
Steps to Become a Licensed Practical Nurse in Pennsylvania
- Enroll in an accredited online or campus-based Pennsylvania licensed LPN program. Most programs require applicants to be at least 17 years or age and have a high school diploma or GED.
- Fulfill all education requirements of the LPN training program and graduate. This will include obtaining CPR and First Aid certifications.
- Contact the State Board of Nursing, Examination Division to request the necessary paperwork to apply for licensure as a Pennsylvania LPN. This application can also be downloaded online from their website – www.dos.state.pa.us
- Complete the application for licensure and submit it, along with all required fees and paperwork, to the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. This includes a mandatory background check. You will not be allowed to obtain a LPN license in Pennsylvania if you have been convicted of a drug related felony within the last ten years.
- Schedule your NCLEX-PN examination. The exam is $200 and must be passed before a LPN license will be issued. However, you must wait until after you complete your education and apply for licensure to sit for the NCLEX.
- Take and pass the NCLEX. If you do not pass the NCLEX-PN on the first try, you must wait 91 days before you can again be tested. There is no limit on how many times you can attempt to pass the exam.
- Wait and receive your LPN license. Typically, within 30 days of passing the exam, an official LPN certificate will be issued.
