If you are considering a career as a laboratory professional, Pennsylvania has both certificate, associate, undergraduate and graduate educational programs that prepare an individual to attain Pennsylvania medical technologist certification, along with some online and distance learning programs as well. Courses may include anatomy and physiology, statistics, chemistry, disease processes, hematology and safety protocols. Most programs do require that the student complete an internship as part of graduation requirements.

Pennsylvania’s Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs does not issue licenses to medical technologists in Pennsylvania or require that they register with the state. However, many employees do prefer to hire those with the Medical Technologist (MT ASCP) certification. For example, a hospital may require a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university and evidence of successful completion of an accredited medical technology program or a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science and ASCP categorical certification. Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems is often a requirement.

Those who plan to seek certification should graduate from a Pennsylvania medical technologist program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).
