Find the right school for you
As you begin your research on this dynamic and rewarding career, you will come to learn that midwifery programs in Pennsylvania are completed with a Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN). In order to be eligible for this type of educational program, you must have a current nurse registration and a Bachelor’s degree. It is not crucial that the degree be in nursing, but most schools recommend it because of the advantage it will give you. Some students elect to attend school part-time, while others choose to attend full-time. The amount of time that you have to dedicate to your degree will ultimately determine how long it takes you to complete your degree. However, many midwifery schools in Pennsylvania now have distance education programs, making it easier for students with personal and familial obligations to attend. In most cases, though, the MSN can be attained within 2-3 years.
The midwifery profession is perhaps one of the oldest known to mankind, with its roots delving as far back as can be studied in history. Over that time, however, the evolution of medicine has changed and, thus, has the skills of a midwife. Midwives are not only deliverers of babies, they are also instrumentally dedicated to the overall health of women. Accordingly, the college that you attend will provide you with a curriculum designed to meet the skills needed to be successful. Take a look at the following course selections, as it is likely that you will be involved in most of them:
- Health and Lifestyle
- Healthcare of Women
- Embryology and Genetics
