There are many state-approved emergency medical service (EMS) training facilities in Pennsylvania. Certification to become a first responder in Pennsylvania requires about 58 hours of training, including CPR, bleeding control and spinal immobilization. The EMT course is about 140 hours and adds topics like airway management and complex spinal immobilization issues to the first responder training. Paramedic training can take up to 3,000 hours (anywhere from 14 months to two years, depending on whether the paramedic seeks certification or a degree from a university or college). Paramedics must already have EMT and CPR certification to take a paramedic course. Building on the EMT skill set, paramedics also study pharmacology, cardiology, trauma management and intravenous fluid therapy.

Pennsylvania also certifies pre-hospital registered nurses and health professional MD/DOs through its Department of Health.

There are several Pennsylvania paramedic schools available.

Pennsylvania Paramedic Continuing Education and Recertification

First responder and EMT certifications last three years. During this time, first responders must earn 16 hours of continuing education credits, half of which must cover medical and trauma topics.

EMTs must take 24 hours of continuing education credit, half of which must cover the same topics listed above.

Paramedics must take 18 hours of continuing education credits each year to maintain their Pennsylvania certification. Again, half of those credits must cover trauma and medical topics. Certification cards are valid as long as the paramedic maintains his or her continuing education credit requirements.

Credits can be earned by taking classes, attending EMS conferences or through online sources.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring EMTs and Paramedics in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown and Erie, Pennsylvania may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Albert Einstein Medical Center, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Saint Luke's Hospitals and Temple University Hospital.
