The law in Pennsylvania states that in order for an individual other than a medical or osteopathic physician, a dentist, a podiatrist, or a chiropractor to perform radiological procedures, s/he must either sit for and pass the Certification Examination in Radiography administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), or must pass a similar test administered by the Pennsylvania Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine. In order to sit for this exam, one must graduate from an education program that is accredited by the JRCERT, or Joint Review Committee on Radiologic Technology. This accreditation ensures that the educational program adheres to standards in classroom and clinical education, while maintaining student safety. JRCERT-accredited programs may be found in teaching hospitals, as well as two year and four year institutions. A list of these programs is available from the ARRT.

Radiologic technologist education consists of a combination of formal classroom and clinical education. In the classroom, the student will learn such things as radiographic procedures, anatomy, ethics, psychology, and radiologic safety. The clinical education component allows the student to apply these theories in the field, and learn to perform the actual job duties of a radiologic technologist in a supervised setting.
