What can I expect from pharmacy technician programs?

Individuals who aspire to become pharmacy technicians are in a prime position to take advantage of the current demand for formally trained graduates of pharmacy tech programs. Pharmacy technician programs are available most commonly at the certificate level, although some students opt for a full two-year associate’s-level technical degree. Pharmacy technician programs designed around providing a certificate are very accessible and provide all the training expected of most employers in less than a year. These programs can be quite affordable; typically costing students between $1000 and $2000 for certificate-level pharmacy technician training.

Part of the appeal of these programs is the fact that they can be completed at a reasonable cost and in a short amount of time; allowing graduates to more quickly enter the workforce with a strong foundation of pharmacological technical training.

Why is graduating from a pharmacy tech program necessary for employment?

Although the common understanding is that there are few if any federally imposed educational requirements for pharmacy techs, Pharmacy Technician Trainingthere is a strong trend in the direction of increased regulation and educational mandates imposed on a state level, as well as by would-be employers. The potential liability to private pharmacies, and the pharmacists that pharmacy techs work under, is too great to consider a job candidate who hasn’t graduated from a comprehensive pharmacy tech program.

The need for quality training and accountability for pharmacy techs was highlighted recently by the highly publicized death of a young chemotherapy patient in Ohio who died as a result of a fatal dose prepared by a pharmacy technician who hadn’t been sufficiently trained. The legislation known as Emily’s law, in respect of the young victim, has called for standardized requirements for training, testing, and licensing of pharmacy techs in the state of Ohio. A number of other states have followed suit voluntarily, and the expectation is that all states will do the same in coming years.

Anybody considering a pharmacy technical career should note that holding a certificate or associates degree upon graduating from a pharmacy technician school is destined to become the expected norm for all states.

Are there online pharmacy technician programs?

Pharmacy tech programs online provide an ideal combination of rigorous study and convenience for students who may not be in a position to attend a traditional campus-based pharmacy technician school. Distance learning options; however, aren’t reserved strictly as a necessity for aspiring pharmacy techs who live far from metropolitan and suburban centers where campus based schooling is more accessible. These online pharmacy technician programs can actually be thought of less as an alternative to traditional brick and mortar institutions, and more as an inevitable evolution of educational accessibility.

Many of these online schools offer pharmacy tech programs that are fully accredited and use the most advanced computer-based learning platforms available. This assures students the highest quality education, and all the pharmacy tech training necessary to meet the increasingly stringent standards set forth by state licensing bodies and national certifying agencies. These schools cater not only to the needs of the students by providing an enriching educational experience, but they also see to it that the public’s interest is kept in mind as they prepare the next generation of responsible, mindful, and detail-oriented graduates for the job market.
