Find the right school for you
Mental health nurse practitioner programs in Montana prepare individuals to enter careers that will help them to appropriately diagnose and to treat others’ psychiatric challenges. The skills they acquire enable them to support children, adults, families and groups. A typical curriculum for either a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in this specialty includes studies in psychotherapy, health assessment, pharmacology and research.
In addition, students participate in practica that provide hands-on experience in settings similar to those in which they will work once they graduate. Not only does field work afford the opportunity to work on behalf of patients, but it also permits the chance to work collegially and collaboratively with other medical professionals.
The Montana Department of Labor and Industry awards licenses to nursing professionals. Those who earn advanced degrees are also eligible to be recognized by the state as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). Furthermore, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) can certify them as adult psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioners.
In addition to passing a qualifying examination to earn this national certification, individuals must have at least 500 hours of experience and training in at least two psychotherapeutic treatment modalities. The test, which is computer-based, is offered throughout the year.
