The field of psychology is very broad and contains many specialties that one can choose from when deciding to pursue a psychology degree in Kansas. Within the state of Kansas, there are approximately 1100 psychologists specializing in the fields of clinical, counseling and school psychology and an additional 120 in the other specialties, such as organizational and industrial psychology (bls.gov). These professionals work for many different employers such as school districts (school psychologists), private practice (counseling psychology) and are often found as instructors in the university setting.

Professional Organizations for Individuals holding a Psychology Degree in Kansas

In addition to the two associations described and listed below, several of the specialties within the psychology field have their own membership associations. Many practicing psychologists choose to belong to the national, state and one or two additional associations, depending on their specialty field of choice.

American Psychological Association (APA)

The American Psychological Association is the primary membership organization for practicing psychologists in the United States and represents over 100,000 members. Its primary mission is to advance the profession of psychology through research, education, and high ethical standards. www.apa.org

Kansas Psychological Association (KPA)

The Kansas Psychological Association is a state affiliate of the APA. It too serves its members through a volunteer board of directors and provides opportunities such as continuing education, representation in legislative and public relations efforts and educational guidance for students looking to enter the field of psychology. www.kspsych.org

Continuing Education for Psychologists

In order to renew a psychology license in Kansas, you must have completed a minimum of fifty (50) continuing education hours within a two (2) year time period prior to renewal. These hours are not currently pre-approved by the BSRD but must pertain to the enhancement of the profession. Additionally, three (3) of these hours must come from the topic of professional ethics in practice and six (6) must come from diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. All proof of attendance and/or completion must be maintained by the licensee in the event of an audit or request for proof from the BSRD.
