Continuing Education and Advancement for Maine Psychologists
Those holding a psychology degree in Maine are issued a two-year license. The license must be renewed biennially on April 30th of even years through the State of Maine Office of Licensing and Registration. Forty hours of continuing education must be completed during each two year renewal cycle. Three hours must be in ethics, 20 hours must be in the current or anticipated area of practice, and three hours must be in supervision (if that psychologist performs any sort of supervision). These regulations are set by the Maine Board of Examiners of Psychologists.
The American Board of Professional Psychology awards specialty certification in thirteen areas as a way to recognize professional achievement. Requirements for specialty certification in Maine include a doctorate in psychology, postdoctoral training in a specialty field, several years of job experience, and professional endorsements. Psychologists in Maine must also pass the specialty board examination.
In addition, many recipients of a psychology degree in Maine choose to improve their advancement opportunities, as well as salary advancement opportunities, by earning an advanced degree, participating in additional continuing education, and even opening their own practice after several years of work experience.
Maine Psychological Association
The Maine Psychological Association represents the many psychologists and psychological examiners in the state. Their mission is to “advance psychology as a science, as a profession, and as a means of promoting human welfare.” They offer many amenities to their members, including no-cost ethics consultations, continuing education workshops, at home continuing education, a newsletter, and legislative representation at the state and national level.
