Obtaining the Education and Training Requirements needed to become a psychologist in Colorado:

Each individual must hold a doctoral degree in the field psychology or a major adequate to be considered equivalent from an accredited, approved program by the American Psychological Association (APA).

The programs offered by the psychology schools in Colorado must include a minimum of 3 academic years of being a full-time student and include courses in:

  1. Scientific and professional ethics and standards
  2. Statistics
  3. Psychometrics

In addition to those courses, knowledge must also be shown by successfully completing 3 or more semester hours (5 or more quarter hours) in each of the following concentrations:

  1. Biological basis of behavior: physiological psychology, neuropsychology, sensation and perception, comparative psychology, and psychopharmacology
  2. Cognitive basis of behavior: learning, thinking, motivation, and emotion
  3. Social basis of behavior: social psychology, group processes, and organizational and systems theory
  4. Individual Differences: personality theory, human development, and abnormal psychology
  5. Research design and methodology: courses that provide a general understanding of applied research, inferential or descriptive statistics, research implementation, or program evaluation and assessment

The doctoral programs offered by psychology schools in Colorado must include a supervised practicum and internship:

  • Practicum: must have a minimum of 400 hours of experience, in which at least 150 hours must have been with experience directly serving a population under the supervision of a licensed psychologist
  • Internship: For acceptable clinical psychology internships, an individual must have at least a full-time supervised experience, either for one full calendar year or for 2 years of part-time experience; and must cover a minimum of 1,500 hours. Appropriate internships for school and counseling psychology must cover at least 1,500 hours and have full-time for that calendar year or part-time experience for two years. Internships offered by psychology schools in Colorado must be accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) or be related very closely to the specified concentration of psychology pronounced by the applicant.
