A doctoral program offered through psychology schools in Washington DC will take six to 10 years to complete, depending on the student's pace and the intensity of the program. Students in the area can pursue a number of online doctoral programs in clinical, organizational, and forensic psychology, or they can choose to obtain their degree from a traditional on-campus program. Many of the psychology schools in Washington, D.C. offer undergraduate and graduate programs in clinical, organizational, experimental, forensic, developmental, cognitive, social, and educational psychology.

Psychologists in the District of Columbia must renew their licenses before December 31 of each odd year. Candidates must complete 30 hours of approved continuing education credits for every two-year renewal period, which include seminars, workshops, grand rounds, educational programs given through conferences, in-service training, and courses offered through an institution of higher education. These courses must be current in their subject matter, be developed and taught by qualified persons, and be administered by an accredited psychology association, university, or heath care institution.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Psychologists in Washington, D.C. / District of Columbia may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the district, including Washington Hospital Center, and the George Washington University Medical Center.
