Psychologists in the state of Kansas are required to hold a doctorate degree earned online or through one of the psychology schools in Kansas. They are also expected to have a minimum of two (2) years of supervised intern work experience. The initial steps leading to this degree are a bachelor’s degree (Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Art) as well as a master’s degree in the field.
There are over twenty-five (25) universities and psychology schools in Kansas that offer these types of educational programs. There are also community colleges offering courses that in most cases will allow you to transfer credit to a four-year university. There is also the potential option of one school transitioning the student through all three degrees, as opposed to attending more than one to complete your education. Preference is given to those programs approved by the American Psychological Association; refer to their website for a complete listing in Kansas (www.apa.org). Additionally, once the bachelor’s level has been completed, most will choose to pursue a specialty for their master’s degree work and will carry this into the doctorate program of their choosing. This is typically an area in the field of psychology that has sparked a genuine interest in the student and one he or she wishes to study more in depth. Some examples of these specialties offered by psychology schools in Kansas include clinical psychology, counseling psychology, child and development psychology, industrial and organizational psychology, and school psychology.
In addition to the classroom component of the degrees, internships, field experiences, and research opportunities are also available in order to gain “real world” exposure to the field of psychology. These will range in level of responsibility depending on the level of education you have achieved. An undergraduate student in their first year of study will obviously have fewer options to pursue than a second year master’s degree student.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Psychologists in Wichita, Overland Park and Kansas City, Kansas may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Wesley Medical Center, Via Christi Regional Medical Center, and Saint Francis Health Center.
