In order to become a psychologist in Massachusetts, you must have the competency acquired from a baccalaureate or master’s program. A bachelor’s degree will allow an individual to assist licensed psychologists. The higher the education you receive, the greater advancement opportunities you are given. If you decide to get a master’s degree, it is recommended to specialize in a specific area. A specialist master’s degree in Massachusetts takes two year to complete, and includes a one year internship.

There are more job opportunities for those who have obtained a doctoral degree in psychology or have a specialty area in the field. A PhD or Doctor of Psychology degree earned online or through one of the accredited psychology schools in Massachusetts will allow an individual to be eligible for a wider array of employment, such as teaching, conducting research, working in a clinic, or becoming a counselor. Typical doctoral program take 5 years to complete, and include an original research-based dissertation. Doctoral programs conclude with at least a one-year internship practicing under a licensed psychologist in the field you are planning to specialize in. There are around 10 master’s programs for specialty areas, and 6 doctoral programs offered by several psychology schools in Massachusetts.
