A doctoral degree earned online or through one of the psychology schools in Michigan is required to become a fully licensed psychologist in Michigan. However, the state licensing procedure seems to cohere rather well with the overall process of obtaining the degree in Michigan. Temporary licenses are offered at each education level so that students can gain practical experience while finishing programs offered by psychology schools in Michigan.
As a master’s student, the applicants must perform 500 hours of practical field work under a licensed psychologist. After their master’s degree, Michigan students may apply for an educational (temporary) limited license. The license is valid for two years with a fee of $95. All applicants must submit finger prints and submit to a criminal background investigation. The psychology schools in Michigan that award master’s degrees to the candidates must submit several forms, as well as transcripts, proof of graduation, and documentation of the 500-hour practicum, to the Board of Psychology. The supervising psychologist during the 500-hour practicum must also submit several forms to the board.
Doctoral students can then upgrade to a Master’s Limited License in Michigan for a fee of $120. This license is valid up to two years, and allows students to complete 2000 hours of work under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. During the 2000 hours, students must work between 16 and 40 hours per week while they complete their degrees.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Psychologists in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor and Lansing, Michigan may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the William Beaumont Hospital, Traverse City State Hospital, Children's Hospital of Michigan and Henry Ford Hospital.
