The State of Missouri requires all candidates seeking licensure to be professional Psychologists go through an accredited online university or one of the psychology schools in Missouri approved by the American Psychological Association. According to the Missouri Code of State Regulations (www.sos.mo.gov), the program's core coursework must cover the basic areas of psychology (biological basis of behavior, cognitive affective basis of behavior, social basis of behavior, individual differences, and the scientific method), which includes courses in sensation, perception, psycho-physiological psychology, learning, cognitive psychology, interpersonal relationships, abnormal psychology, behavioral psychology, experimental design, and statistics.

Professional Psychologists must participate in continuing education programs, often available through psychology schools in Missouri, every two years to stay current with their practice. Each cycle of continued education includes 40 hours of coursework, which includes active participation and work in higher education, the American Psychological Association, their regional psychological association, the Missouri Psychological Association, their local psychological association, the American Medical Association, and other professional groups. Fifteen of the 40 hours must be completed through classes, seminars, and other activities provided by an accredited university; the remaining hours can be completed through any of the remaining institutions.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Psychologists in Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield and Independence, Missouri may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the St. Johns Mercy Medical Center, St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Barnes Jewish Hospital and Missouri Baptist Medical Center.
