  1. An excellent high school education is a very important first step in working in the mental health field. Work closely with your guidance counselor in high school so that you can best prepare for acceptance into a 3 or 4-year post secondary educational program online or through one of the psychology schools in Pennsylvania.
  2. A foundation of classes in biology, math, chemistry and English are imperative for your later success.
  3. After completing high school you can gain entrance into a college or university of your choice. Make certain that the educational institution you choose is nationally accredited. Most individuals looking to become a psychologist will major in psychology in college. Maintaining a high GPA by attending class, studying hard and carefully completing assignments and tests will make you a competitive candidate as you finish your bachelor's degree and go on to a graduate program.
  4. At this point, some individuals will go directly into a doctoral program offered through one of the psychology schools in Pennsylvania to gain either a Doctor of Philosophy or a Doctor of Psychology. You may also choose to gain a Master's degree, gain work experience and then go back into the doctoral program when you have money saved for the educational expenses.
  5. In conjunction with the class work and research necessary to gain a Psy. D or Ph.D you will need to work as a student in a clinical setting, supervised by a licensed psychologist for a minimum of 3000 contact hours.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Psychologists in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown and Erie, Pennsylvania may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Albert Einstein Medical Center, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Saint Luke's Hospitals and Temple University Hospital.
