Psychologists are doctors, which means you need to go through the full gamut of educational levels, from graduating high school to earning your bachelor’s degree, continuing on to your master’s degree and finally defending a dissertation in pursuit of your doctorate of psychology.
Students considering psychology schools in Rhode Island should note that while you undergraduate degree need not be in psychology, you will have to take many math, behavioral science and physical science classes at your four-year college or university. You will have to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and have an impressive grade point average (GPA) to be accepted into graduate school.
You will continue to learn about the human mind, problems that may develop in people’s behavior through stress, addiction, chemical imbalances and other typical problems. You will undergo psychotherapy not only to determine whether you have any issues that need to be dealt with before you can be trusted to help others handle their mental problems, but also to give you an idea of what it is like to be analyzed so thoroughly.
You will have an internship before and after you earn your doctorate, and at some point you will choose a specialty to branch out into. You might want to work in schools, or in corporations, or specialize in marital counseling, addiction counseling, or work with the young or the old.
