Of the major career areas of psychology (clinical, counseling, and school), South Dakota has the lowest total number of employed professionals in the region. Only 0.04% of the state’s work force are graduates of psychology schools in South Dakota; compared to 0.06 – 0.09% for the states bordering South Dakota. The number of clinical, counseling, and school psychologists practicing in the state peaked in 2006 at 210, but has since dropped to 160 in 2008. There were only 30 more psychologists in 2008 than there were in 2002. However, very important to note for those considering attending one of the psychology schools in South Dakota is the fact that this state offers the highest mean income for psychologists in the region, which spiked by 12% between 2007 and 2008 to $70,800.
