The certification for psychology residency begins immediately after aspiring psychologists finish their doctoral studies through one of the psychology schools in Utah. Transcripts, as well as specific descriptions of each pertinent class taken during school, must be submitted to The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). Usually the college or university awarding the doctoral degree must send transcripts directly; however, applicants may submit transcripts themselves if they are in officially sealed envelopes. The residency application requires an $85 fee.
During residency, attendees of psychology schools in Utah must complete 4,000 hours of supervised practice. Every 40 hours of practice, must be accompanied with a one-hour formal supervisory meeting with a licensed psychologist. Utah also has additional residency requirements for those psychologists that want to conduct metal health therapy during their careers. Mental health therapy may include evaluating conditions, diagnosing, prescribing action, and conducting professional intervention of mental health patients. At least a quarter of the residency hours must directly involve metal health therapy. If any part of the residency is conducted outside of Utah, the supervisor must send a resume and proof of licensure from his/her state to the DOLP.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Psychologists in Salt Lake City, West Valley, Provo and West Jordon, Utah may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Intermountain Medical Center, Saint Mark's Hospital, University of Utah Health Care and Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.
