Like in all other states, professional psychologists in Washington State are required to have a doctoral degree from one of the accredited psychology schools in Washington. Moreover, psychologists must pass a rigorous application process in order to become fully licensed by the state. The Psychology Program, under the Washington State Department of Health, is in charge of monitoring the licensing process for psychologists. The supervisory component of the application process is broken down into three parts: (1) a practicum, (2) internship experience, and (3) pre-internship and/or post-doctoral experience facilitated through the psychology schools in Washington state. In total, 3,300 hours are required to complete the supervisory component of the application.
The practicum must be at least 300 hours and last at least 2 semesters during the applicant’s doctoral studies. One hundred of these hours must be of supervision, while the rest should be direct experience. Details of what the supervision must include may be found at the Washington State Department’s website, given below.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Psychologists in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane and Bellevue, Washington may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the University of Washington Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center, Sacred Heart Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center.
