Radiologic technologist schools and training programs in Maryland offer three degree options. These include the opportunity to earn a certificate, an associate degree, or a bachelor degree. Maryland simply specifies that all radiologic technologists must be graduates of radiologic technologist programs that are approved by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology or the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine. All radiologic technologists working in Maryland must be credentialed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) and licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians.

Courses in most radiologic technology programs have titles such as radiographic procedures, clinical radiography, maintenance and operation of imaging equipment, advanced radiography and radiation biology and protection. In addition, students must fulfill clinical internship requirements at local medical institutions. Examples of possible participating facilities include Union Hospital in Elkton, Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore, Western Maryland Health System in Cumberland, Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, Med Star Health in Columbia, Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly and Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital in Chestertown.

Graduates then must pass the national certification examination of the ARRT or NMTCB before applying for Maryland state licensure.
