Steps to Become a Dental Hygienist in Rhode Island

Dental hygienists in Rhode Island must have a license in order to practice. Licenses in Rhode Island are granted through the Board of Examiners in Dentistry. Their contact information is below and license applications should be sent to the following:

A person wanting to receive a license in dental hygiene must have the following qualities:
  • Have good morals
  • Be at the very least 18 years old
  • Have completed a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation through the American Dental Association, specifically in dental hygiene and the program must be approved by the board as well
  • Must have passed required all examination that are required for licensure by the board
  • Be in good standing with other states in which a license may already be held.
Applications for licensure must have the following:
  • Must be completely filled out, notarized, and submitted to the board at least thirty days before a board meeting for the board’s review
  • Certified copy of birth certificate or if a foreign national, immigration papers or a resident alien card will be sufficient
  • One unmounted photo that is 2x3 in size and is a headshot with shoulders
  • Official transcript, signed by dean or registrar of school, from dental hygiene program
  • Results of Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners exam sent directly from the organization or other similar exam scores (if they have not taken this exam, other options can be found at the following link under section 10.1.1 with scoring information: http://www2.sec.state.ri.us/dar_filing/regdocs/released/pdf/DOH/4863.pdf)
  • If a license is held in another state by the applicant, verification that the applicant is in good standing in that state is required
  • The application fee must be made out to the General Treasurer, State of Rhode Island, in the amount of $130.00. There is an additional fee for a local anesthesia permit of $70.00.
