While Rhode Island does not have a state licensure exam for potential nursing home administrators, there are, of course, national certification exam and degree requirements that must be met. Rhode Island’s Department of Health specifies that any applicant wanting to be considered for licensing as a nursing home administrator within the state have a bachelor degree in any discipline, provided that certain requirements are met. The applicant must have at least 15 credit hours of coursework in things that nursing home administrators deal with every day, including resident care, financial management and human resources. Ideally, applicants in Rhode Island will have a bachelor of arts or science degree in health care or long term care administration, as these courses are automatically included in such a degree program.
Since Rhode Island is such a small state, the Department of Health says that there are just 300 licensed administrators functioning statewide, with only 12 new licenses added each year. This shows that the field is wide open, especially with Rhode Island being the third highest paying state for long term care administrators to work (behind Washington and Massachusetts). The outlook is great for students of long term care administration who desire nursing home administrator jobs in Rhode Island and elsewhere within the United States.
