A degree in social work is typically earned at the bachelors level. Many of those seeking a social work degree in the District of Columbia will continue on to graduate work in order to qualify for a state license. The curriculum in the Master of Social Work (MSW) program provides the base of knowledge needed to succeed in this field. The goal of this primary educational component is to ready you in many areas of practice including the following:

  • Relationship building
  • Problem identification and assessment
  • Solutions for selecting plans and interventions
  • Implementation and evaluation procedures
  • Professional development
  • Ethics
  • Multicultural competency

The master’s program includes coursework that will build on what was learned during your undergraduate degree program, and continues to refine your skills. During the MSW program you can expect the first year (30 credits) to focus on these foundation-building skills. In your second year, you will choose your focus, deciding if you prefer a clinical social work practice or if you would rather go into social work administration and policy. Once you choose your focus, you will spend your internship in an appropriate office or clinical setting.

Many colleges and universities around the DC area offer several options to meet your personal lifestyle. Many have part-time programs as well as full-time. You may also find online colleges that offer distance-learning options.
