You can start your career in this rewarding career by choosing one of the social work degrees in Illinois. There are both graduate and undergraduate programs available, but you should be aware of what your specific title of licensure requires before you choose a degree program.

Social workers and clinical social workers are held to different educational requirements. To be licensed as a social worker in Illinois, you need to complete 4 years’ undergraduate study, which would terminate with a bachelor-level education. Clinical social workers have higher levels of responsibility and are required to complete a graduate program which awards either a master degree or doctoral degree. This typically adds 2 years’ educational study onto the bachelor degree option.

Both graduate and undergraduate programs in social work include these classes:

  • Behavior Modification
  • Study of Addiction
  • Interpersonal Communication
  • Social Structure
  • Abnormal Psychology

Of note, most social work programs in Illinois are offered with an online option. This means that at least part of the degree program can be completed online, without the restrictions of traditional classroom-based study. Before you enroll in any school, consider your online options and how they can benefit you.

Through both online and campus-based programs, aspiring social workers in Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, and Joliet, Illinois can find themselves employed by the largest medical facilities in the state, including John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Evanston Hospital, Advocate Christ Medical Center, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
