In Kentucky, the Kentucky Board of Social Work grants social work licenses. There are different licenses, representing different levels of social work degrees, as well as varying experience within the field. The title of LSW (licensed social worker) is conferred upon those who have completed a bachelors program in social work from an accredited school, while the title of CSW (certified social worker) requires a master's. LCSW certification has similar requirements to CSW, but requires, in addition to prior licensing as a CSW, 200 hours supervision by an official LCSW supervisor -- unless one has had five years of high level licensure in another state. In other words, LCSW licensure is granted to those who display exemplary work in the field after receiving their master’s degree.
Accredited baccalaureate and masters programs are offered through a number of colleges and universities.
After earning a degree, social workers must continue to take CEUs in such areas as professional ethics, HIV training, and handling of domestic violence. This helps ensure safe, competent practice. Some continuing education units are earned through workshop attendance; others may be pursued online.
