In Louisiana, the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners regulates licensing of social workers. There are three main types of licenses: registered social worker, graduate social worker, and licensed clinical social worker. All three levels of certification allow practitioners to work with the public in such roles as case manager, counselor, and advocate. There are stipulations, though, as to work setting as well as to the level of specialized knowledge that is required to carry out job duties. Only those with the highest level of licensing, LCSW, may engage in private practice. Graduate social workers can legally carry out more job functions than registered social workers -- including supervising those in training.

A social work degree in Louisiana requires completion of an accredited program at the bachelors level at minimum. Louisiana’s prospective social workers should know that employers, even in positions where it is not legally mandated, might desire a master’s degree. A would-be social worker can get some sense of what career opportunities are available at different levels of licensure by perusing official boards at NASW.

Education doesn’t end with certification. Continuing education is also required of Louisiana social workers. This includes two hours of ethics training every two years. Louisiana’s prospective social workers should also be cognizant that, while the names for the different certification levels do vary by state, there are many similarities in programs.
