Maine is one of the few states that allows graduates with a Bachelor in Social Work to perform social work in the state, although they may not conduct the private, clinical practice of social work as an applicant with a graduate degree is authorized to conduct. The basic social work degree in Maine is a BSW, which authorizes an applicant to become a Licensed Social Worker (LW). If you possess a Master in Social Work (MSW), you may apply first to work as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LM) and then to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LC), which will allow you to engage in the private, independent practice of social work in Maine.
Once you have become a Licensed Master Social Worker, to work towards a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, one must engage in the clinical practice of social work under the management of a LC. To earn a clinical LMSW, your coursework must include two personality theory courses and either four clinical methods courses or three clinical methods courses plus one additional personality theory course. In addition, you must have 3200 hours of social work practice, with 96 of those hours supervised by a clinical social worker within Maine.
