Michigan makes it a bit easier than some other states to get into the field of social work. Depending on the level of your social work degree in Michigan, you can work at various levels within the social service system. With two years of college including four courses in human resources, or 2000 hours (one year of experience in social work under the supervision of a licensed bachelor's or master's social worker, you can become licensed as a social work technician. In order to become licensed as a social worker, you will need a bachelor or master degree (preferably in social work, and it must be from one of the great number of Michigan-based or online schools that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education).  You also need 4,000 hours (two years) of experience in social work under the instruction of a licensed master's social worker.

Once licensed, continuing education is required to maintain that licensure in Michigan. All licensed bachelor social workers and licensed master social workers must complete continuing education credits to renew their license every three years. Both bachelor level and master level social workers must complete 45 credits within three years, with five of those credit hours in ethics and at least one credit hour in pain and symptom management. These courses may be taken at any CSWE-accredited school that offers, at the minimum, a Bachelor of Social Work program of study.
