Those who desire to become a social worker in Minnesota have a variety of options available to them. Depending upon the social work degree in Minnesota you decide to pursue, you can work with children, in schools, in medical or public health settings, with the mentally ill, with substance abusers, and in many other settings. It all begins with obtaining a bachelor (BSW) in social work degree. This degree is available at schools including brick-and-mortar and distance learning programs. This usually takes about four years and consists of classes including human behavior and the social environment, social work research and practice, and a field experience requirement which varies from school to school.

A master (MSW) in social work degree takes about two years longer to obtain, and will have more of a clinical focus than a BSW program. It, too, is available at a variety of schools in Minnesota, from online to regular colleges and institutions. Coursework will usually be 60 credit hours total and will most likely include classes like research and evaluation methods, advocacy and social policy and applied social work practice (field experience). Once licensed, you will have to take continuing education courses to maintain your Minnesota license. During the 24 months between license renewals, you must complete a minimum of 30 clock hours of continuing education in social work from Board-approved providers.
