Social Work Degrees in New Jersey – NJ

Any practicing social worker, whether it’s a licensed social worker (LSW) or a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), must have a master in social work in order to practice in New Jersey. When earning a graduate social work degree in New Jersey, there are certain class qualifications that must be met. First, the school must be accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Next, there are specific courses you must take mandated by New Jersey. These are:

Twelve hours of graduate course work in clinical social work practice, which includes courses in:

    1. Human behavior and social environment
    2. Diagnosis and assessment in social work practice
    3. Models of psychotherapy or clinical practice
    4. Clinical supervision and consultation
    5. Intervention with special populations

After earning a degree in New Jersey, one must then take the master level social worker exam given by the Association of Social Work Boards. Passing this and fulfilling other application requirements of the state qualifies you as a licensed social worker (LSW) in New Jersey.

Besides completing certain courses, to become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in New Jersey, one must have two years of full-time, direct clinical contact with clients. This must have been experienced under the command of a LCSW in New Jersey and must be at least 1920 hours long. After this experience is completed, you may sit for the LCSW exam by the Association of Social Work Boards. Passing this and completing application requirements will qualify you as a LCSW in New Jersey.
