Social Work Degrees in New York – NY

A social work degree at the graduate level in New York is mandatory for anyone who wants to engage in the licensed practice of social work in that state. One must earn a master of social work to pursue an LMSW or LCSW in New York. This program must be a minimum of two years and 60 credits long, and must include specific coursework at the graduate level. These include: social work values and ethics; diversity, social justice, and at-risk populations; human behavior in the social environment; social welfare policy and service delivery systems; foundation and advanced social work practice; and social work practice evaluation and research. Additionally, a course in child abuse recognition and reporting must be completed by every applicant for licensure in the state. This course must be given by an approved state provider.
In addition, New York requires all students must complete a 900-hour field practicum as well as 12 semester hours designed to prepare students to practice as an LCSW. The courses must emphasize the “person-in-environment” perspective, and must explore the following areas:
- Diagnosis and assessment in clinical social work practice
- Clinical social work treatment; and
- Clinical social work practice with general and special populations
