Social work degrees in South Carolina can be earned at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Social work programs couple classroom studies with experiential learning to develop students’ professional and leadership abilities.

Students enrolled in bachelor degree programs study ethics, human behavior, counseling and social policy so that they may successfully enter the field as skilled practitioners.   In addition, they are required to complete a supervised internship that will facilitate the practical application of textbook studies to real-world settings.

A Master of Social Work (MSW) degree provides advanced studies to assume professional roles within individual, group, community and organizational settings.  In South Carolina, this graduate degree is offered for full-time students as well as on a part-time basis through evening and weekend classes for individuals who have family, work and/or financial obligations.  Students enrolled in Ph.D. social work programs develop the skills necessary to both teach at colleges and universities and to contribute to the field through research initiatives.

In addition to their degree coursework, individuals in South Carolina may opt to pursue specialty certifications in social work.   For example, those who hold an LBSW may opt to pursue certification in either gerontology or in children, youth and family social work; those who hold an LMSW may opt to pursue certification in either alcohol, tobacco and other drugs or in school social work.  These certifications are offered through the National Association of Social Workers, the largest professional social worker membership organization in the world.
