A social work degree in Texas can be pursued in both undergraduate and graduate programs.  University coursework educates students to become ethical practitioners whose classroom knowledge can be thoughtfully applied in the real world to advance the welfare of the less advantaged.

Students who wish to attain a Bachelor Degree in Social Work enroll in courses that address at-risk children, gerontology, social justice, public policy and research methods.  They must also participate in supervised field experience so that they can create connections between theory and practice through a hands-on, experiential learning opportunity.

A Master of Social Work (MSW) prepares students for advanced practice in the field through a combination of course content and supervised practice.  Coursework includes focused instruction in direct practice, research and administrative leadership in addition to several hours in the field working with clients.  Students in Texas may be able to concentrate their studies in areas of specific interest such as either clinical social work or community and administrative leadership.  In some instances, the MSW may also be combined with another degree program, e.g., either the Master of Divinity (MDiv), Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Public Affairs (MPAff) or the Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD).

Ph.D. programs in social work delve deeply into the synthesis between practice and policy with a strong research focus.  Students acquire knowledge of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analyses as well as statistics in preparation for writing a dissertation.
