In Utah, social work degrees are offered on the Bachelor, Master’s and doctoral levels. Programs in the field are designed to prepare students to positively influence the development and the implementation of social institutions, public policies and community services to ameliorate the problems with which many contend and to promote egalitarianism.
Bachelor degree programs provide instruction in social welfare, human behavioral sciences, cultural fluency and communication. Students must also undertake a research practicum to integrate their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. This supervised experiential learning opportunity typically takes place in a community agency that has been evaluated and assessed as having a mission, client population and range of services that align with the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education.
Students who seek a Master’s degree in the field increase their awareness of the ethical responsibilities, relevant technologies, research approaches and interdisciplinary studies. Coursework is offered both on-campus and online and also on full-time and part-time bases to accommodate the schedules and geographies of all students. In some instances, the Master of Social Work (MSW) may be combined with the Master of Public Health (MPH) for a joint course of study that examines both human behavior and how health programs and policies affect people’s lives.
Doctoral programs in social work are theory-based and research-oriented, emphasizing the development of critical thinking and analytical skills. Students must complete a dissertation as part of the degree requirement. Studies can be undertaken either full-time on campus or online in a summer-intensive curriculum.
