One of the first things you will do to become a social worker is choose where you want to go to school. Degree programs are offered through either traditional or online universities. Many of the local universities and colleges in Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette and Rock Springs have degrees that will satisfy the state licensing requirements. Earning a social work degree in Wyoming will prepare graduates for the unique demands of this vitally important job. These programs prepare graduates to deal with stressful situations by teaching them to become effective, solution-minded professionals whose primary concern is the welfare of the individuals they serve. Participants in these programs can expect to develop skills in the following areas:

  • How to provide services to patients and families
  • Social work consultation
  • Community leadership and teaching
  • Social welfare programs
  • Working with various age groups
  • Crisis management
  • Dynamics of social psychology

The bachelor’s program can often be completed in four years, while a master’s will take at least a few years longer. Each degree will have semester hours devoted to a practicum that is interwoven into the program as an important learning component.
